Earthly Things

This letter (Philipians) was written to the church in Philipi to provide advice and encouragement. It's helpful to read v. 18 first to get a better context for the devotional.

Take a minute to think about how you spent the last 24 hours. How much time did you spend on God, in comparison to say, time spent communicating with people online (email/aim/msm/etc)? It's okay to do more with our time than to just pray/read the Bible but it's important to examine our motivations and priorities. Is that video game becoming more important to you than making sure that you fit a good quiet time into your day (okay, so maybe that's just me!)? Or maybe you've become so caught up in wanting to succeed academically that you've forgotten how God has blessed you with the opportunity to be here in the first place. It's easy to get caught up in earthly pleasures and rewards. However, these things can't make us whole and become meaningless if we put them above God. Think about it....cause I can tell you from experience that it's no fun to have worked really hard for something you thought would make you happy, only to feel even more down when it didn't give you the expected satisfaction....

Cheers

Verse 18 reads: For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. (NIV)

The Daily Devo
by Pastor Steve Baney

Philippians 3:19 "Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things." (NIV)

These people served their own desires, their hungers. People who do this are headed for destruction. And what do they brag about? Shameful things! What is your god? In other words, who or what do you serve? Who or what do you put most of your time into?

Lord, help me to realize who I serve, and help me to serve You and You alone.
