Submission in Two Steps

James 4:7 "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (NIV)

What does it mean to submit? Let's look at the word submission. An easy way to explain it's meaning is to divide it into two parts, sub- and - mission. The prefix sub- means secondary (like a substitute teacher replaces the regular teacher). And the ending -mission means goal or plan. When we submit to God, it means putting our plans aside, secondary to God's plans. Since When you submit to God, Satan has no power over you.
